Loss of confidence

Are you struggling with a loss of trust in a relationship or toward someone close to you? Find out what causes it, how it affects relationships and mental well-being, and when a psychologist can help.

Loss of trust is one of the most painful experiences in relationships because it does not affect only one specific situation, but the very sense of safety, certainty, and calm between people. It may arise after lying, infidelity, disappointment, manipulation, broken boundaries, long-term secrecy, or even after repeated small failures that gradually build up over time. Trust is one of the basic pillars of close relationships, and its disruption has a direct effect on relational well-being and mental health.

What Loss of Trust Means

Loss of trust does not only mean that a person stops believing another person in one particular matter. Often, the broader feeling that the relationship is safe, clear, and real also begins to fall apart. A person then starts doubting not only specific behaviour, but also words, intentions, the past, and sometimes even their own ability to read reality correctly. That is exactly why loss of trust can be so powerful and exhausting.

How Loss of Trust Can Show Up

It often shows up as inner restlessness, tension, a need to check, returning to details, thinking over and over again about what was true and what was not, or strong sensitivity to further small signals. In some people, anger and defensiveness dominate. In others, sadness, anxiety, shame, or the feeling that they can no longer relax may be stronger. When the disruption of trust is deep, it can also affect sleep, concentration, self-esteem, and overall functioning.

Why It Can Be So Hard to Move Forward

Loss of trust is difficult also because a person often experiences not only pain from what happened, but also an inner shock from the fact that they were mistaken, overlooked something, or felt safe where safety was not actually present. A deeper insecurity may then arise not only toward the other person, but also toward oneself. It is this combination of disappointment, hurt, and uncertainty that often makes loss of trust slow to heal.

Can Trust Be Rebuilt?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Rebuilding trust is not a matter of one apology or one promise. If a relationship is to be rebuilt after trust has been broken, it usually needs time, openness, consistent behaviour, and willingness on both sides to tolerate discomfort, questions, and uncertainty. In couples after infidelity or another breach of trust, it is commonly described that rebuilding the relationship requires the gradual recreation of safety, clear agreements, and a better ability to talk even about very painful topics.

What Most Often Keeps Destroying Trust Further

What is especially damaging is further obscuring of the truth, half-truths, defensiveness at all costs, minimising the other person’s pain, or pressure to close everything quickly. When the person who damaged trust does not want to take responsibility or tries to downplay the hurt, rebuilding the relationship becomes much harder. Endless interrogation without movement forward also does not help, especially when both people remain stuck only in pain and defence. In relationship work after betrayal, it is commonly emphasised that without clarity, accountability, and safer communication, trust is very hard to rebuild.

What Usually Helps

What helps most is slowing down and not trying to “fix” the relationship within a few days. It is useful to name what happened, what is most urgent now, what continues to hurt the other person, and what might create at least a basic sense of greater safety. In relationships generally, regular open communication, genuine listening, and the ability to have difficult conversations without turning them into further battles are helpful. Good conversations and more conscious communication have long been linked with deeper closeness and better conflict management.

When a Psychologist or Therapist Can Help

A psychologist or therapist can be very useful when loss of trust triggers strong anxiety, intrusive thoughts, a need for control, insomnia, inner chaos, or a complete breakdown of communication. Individual therapy can help a person carry the hurt, find support in themselves again, and understand what they need next. Couples therapy can be useful where both people want to try rebuilding the relationship and need a safe framework for conversation, accountability, and rebuilding trust. Professional sources describe therapy after betrayal as a meaningful path precisely when a couple or an individual does not want to remain only in pain, but needs to find a next direction.

When It Is No Longer Only About Trust, but Also About Safety

If the loss of trust is connected with manipulation, gaslighting, repeated humiliation, control, or another form of harm, the main question may no longer be “how to rebuild trust,” but rather “how to rebuild safety.” In such a situation, focusing on saving the relationship at any cost may not be the best path. Protecting one’s own boundaries, mental well-being, and sense of reality may be more important. Long-term deception and gaslighting are described as patterns that can fundamentally damage self-esteem, trust, and the sense of security.

You Are Not Alone in This

Loss of trust can very quickly bring a person into a state where they no longer know what to think, what to believe, or how to feel steady again. But that does not mean they are weak or overreacting. It means that something very fundamental has been affected. A psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can be important support so that a person does not remain only in doubt, pain, and control, but can begin again to look for more calm, clarity, and a healthier next step.
