Infidelity
Infidelity
Are you struggling with infidelity in your relationship? Find out why it happens, how to cope with pain, loss of trust, and uncertainty, and when a couples or individual psychologist can help.
Infidelity belongs among the most painful injuries in a relationship because it does not affect only fidelity itself, but above all trust, the sense of safety, and the certainty that what the relationship was built on was real. That is exactly why its impact is often so strong. In the affected partner, intrusive thoughts, constant returning to details, heightened alertness, intense emotions, and sometimes even bodily reactions similar to trauma often appear.
What Infidelity Can Mean
Infidelity does not have to be only sexual in nature. For some couples, secret emotional closeness, hidden online communication, or intimacy that crosses the relationship’s boundaries can be just as hurtful. What one couple may still consider acceptable can for another already be a clear violation of trust. That is why it is important not only “what exactly happened,” but also how deeply it affected the sense of safety and openness between the partners.
How Infidelity Can Show Up Psychologically
After infidelity is discovered, shock, anger, sadness, humiliation, shame, chaos, and a strong need to understand what actually happened often appear. Constant overthinking, checking, returning to details, insomnia, loss of appetite, tension in the body, or the feeling that a person suddenly no longer knows what they can trust are also common. Research describes romantic betrayal as something that can lead to high levels of stress, depressive symptoms, anxiety, hyperarousal, intrusive images, and somatic difficulties.
Why Infidelity Can Feel So Devastating
Infidelity often breaks not only the present, but also the past. A person begins to doubt shared memories, what was real, and sometimes even themselves. Questions may arise such as whether they missed something, whether they failed, or why they “did not see it earlier.” For many people, alongside the pain of the partner’s betrayal, there is also a deep shock to self-worth and to the way they perceive the reality of the relationship.
What Happens on the Other Side
Even the partner who caused the infidelity is usually not without emotions. Guilt, shame, fear of losing the relationship, defensiveness, or on the contrary helplessness about how to repair the situation often appear. But that does not mean the pain of both sides “adds up equally.” In practice, it is important first to acknowledge the extent of the injury, stop any further harm, and only then begin to address deeper causes and relationship context. In couples therapy, the first step is often exactly the stabilisation of emotions and the creation of greater safety.
Can a Relationship Be Saved After Infidelity?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Infidelity itself does not automatically mean the end of a relationship, but it does mean that the relationship can no longer continue in exactly the same form as before. Some couples decide to end the relationship, while others want to try to rebuild trust and see whether the relationship can be rebuilt in a new way. In such a situation, couples therapy does not prescribe one “correct” path, but helps clarify whether the partners want to stay together or separate in the least destructive way possible.
What Usually Helps
What helps most is not remaining only in chaos, interrogation, and defensiveness. It is often useful to slow down, name what is most urgent right now, and not try to solve the whole relationship within a few days. If the partners want to try to rebuild the relationship after infidelity, it is usually important to end contact with the third person, reduce further hurtful uncertainty, make space for the most basic questions, and only then gradually move toward deeper topics. Professional materials also point out that endless interrogation and defensive reactions usually do not support healing.
When a Psychologist or Therapist Can Help
A psychologist or therapist can be very important when infidelity triggers intense anxiety, insomnia, intrusive thoughts, panic, loss of self-worth, or a complete breakdown of communication. Individual therapy can help a person carry the shock, shame, anger, and chaos. Couples therapy, in turn, can be useful where both partners need a safe framework for conversation, decision-making, and possible rebuilding of the relationship. Research and clinical practice show that couples after infidelity may experience improved relationship satisfaction and reduced anxiety after therapy, but the process is demanding and requires time and willingness from both sides.
When Immediate Help Is Needed
If infidelity triggers a state in which a person cannot manage everyday functioning, has thoughts of self-harm, feels strong hopelessness, or feels that they cannot hold themselves together any longer, it is important not to wait and to seek urgent help immediately. Research warns that in hurt partners, romantic betrayal in vulnerable situations may also be linked with suicidal thoughts.
You Are Not Alone in This
Infidelity is often one of the hardest relationship shocks precisely because it strikes love, trust, and self-worth all at once. The fact that this experience has deeply shaken you does not mean weakness. It means that something happened which disrupted a basic sense of safety. A psychologist, therapist, or couples psychotherapy can be an important support so that a person does not remain in this situation only with pain, confusion, and endless questions.
