Social phobia

Are you struggling with social phobia, fear of people, or strong insecurity in contact with others? Find out when to seek help and how a psychologist can help you find the next step.

Social phobia, now also called social anxiety disorder, is not ordinary shyness or normal nervousness before speaking in public. It is a strong and persistent fear of situations in which a person may be observed, judged, or embarrassed. What is typical is that the anxiety is not only unpleasant, but begins to limit the person in everyday life, at school, at work, in relationships, and in ordinary contact with other people.

What to understand by social phobia

A person with social phobia often does not feel fear only in big situations such as a presentation or a job interview. Even an ordinary conversation with a stranger, answering in front of others, making a phone call, eating in front of people, asking for help, or simply entering a room where someone is already present can be difficult. The main fear is often that they will seem awkward, nervous, strange, or that others will notice their anxiety and judge them negatively.

How social phobia can show up

Social phobia often shows itself both psychologically and physically. There is strong fear before a social situation, long periods of worrying in advance and analysing afterwards, and a need either to avoid situations or endure them at the cost of great tension. Physical symptoms often include a racing heart, trembling, sweating, tension, blushing, a tight stomach, feeling blank-minded, or difficulty speaking naturally. Some people may then seem withdrawn or cold, even though inside they are experiencing strong anxiety.

When it is no longer just shyness

A certain amount of nervousness around people is normal. Social phobia is more likely when the fear is strong, repeated, and leads the person to restrict their life. They may stop speaking in meetings, avoid meeting new people, postpone studies, change jobs, stop going to social events, or stay on the sidelines for a long time just to avoid the possibility of being judged. It is exactly this impact on ordinary functioning that shows it is no longer only temperament or shyness.

Why social phobia is so exhausting

What makes it very difficult is that the person is not dealing with just one specific situation, but often lives in constant tension about when the next social moment will come that they will have to handle. There is anticipation of disaster, close monitoring of one’s own behaviour, fear of blushing, trembling, or failing, and then long reflection afterwards on every detail. This strengthens the anxiety even more, and the person may feel that there is no way out of this cycle.

What often makes social phobia worse

Social phobia is usually made worse by avoidance. In the short term, avoidance brings relief, but in the long term it confirms the feeling that social situations are truly dangerous. Strong self-criticism, comparing oneself with others, long rumination after contact with people, or focusing on how one appears to others can also make it worse. When stress, exhaustion, or low self-confidence are added, the anxiety often becomes even stronger.

What usually helps

What helps most is gradual and safe work with anxiety, not pressure to “just toughen up.” It is useful to learn to recognise the thoughts that intensify the anxiety, work with breathing and physical tension, and gradually try situations that the person has been avoiding. It is important to go in small steps and not expect confidence to come before experience. When a person starts learning to handle social situations in ways other than escape, this is often one of the most important shifts.

When a psychologist or therapist can help

A psychologist or therapist can be very useful when social phobia limits the person in everyday life, at school, at work, or in relationships. Commonly recommended approaches include psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioural therapy, and, when needed, medication or a combination of both. Help also makes sense when social phobia is accompanied by panic, depression, loneliness, or the feeling that anxiety is taking away important parts of life.

When it is good to seek help sooner

If, because of social phobia, a person becomes completely isolated, stops going to school or work, cannot manage basic contact with people, or if thoughts of self-harm, strong hopelessness, or other serious mental health difficulties appear, it is important not to wait and to seek professional help as soon as possible. Social phobia is treatable, but the longer a person remains trapped only in avoidance, the more the anxiety can grow.

You are not alone in this

Social phobia can very easily convince a person that they are weak, strange, or less capable than others. In reality, it is an anxiety problem with its own symptoms, its own mechanisms, and also its own treatment options. The fact that a person does not feel safe in social situations does not mean that there is something wrong with them. It means that their mind is reacting with an exaggerated alarm in situations where they would need more calm and support. And this is exactly where a psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can help a great deal.
