Social isolation/loneliness

Are you struggling with social isolation or loneliness in yourself or someone close to you? Find out when to seek help, what may be behind the problem, and how a psychologist can help you find the next step.

Social isolation and loneliness are not the same thing, even though they are often confused. Loneliness is more of an inner feeling of disconnection and lack of closeness, while social isolation means objectively having less contact with people or a weaker social network. A person can be around other people and still feel lonely. And on the other hand, someone can often be alone without feeling abandoned. Both experiences, however, can significantly affect mental well-being and overall health.

What to understand by this

Loneliness is not only being alone. It is often the feeling that a person does not fully belong anywhere, that they are not truly seen, heard, or genuinely connected with anyone. Social isolation, by contrast, may look like long-term limitation of contact, weak relational support, missing support, or a life in which there is almost nobody around. The WHO describes quality social ties as important for mental and physical well-being at every age.

How they can show up

Social isolation and loneliness often do not show up only as sadness. There may be inner emptiness, a sense of disconnection, a lower mood, anxiety, greater sensitivity, shame, loss of motivation, withdrawal, or the feeling that it is becoming harder and harder to connect with other people. The NHS also points out that if loneliness affects everyday life, it may also be related to stress, anxiety, or depression.

Why it can be so hard to get out of it

A major difficulty is that loneliness and isolation easily reinforce themselves. A person feels disconnected, and therefore reaches out less, goes among people less, or begins avoiding situations in which they might experience rejection. But that only deepens the feeling of isolation even more. Research also shows that when loneliness and social isolation occur together, their impact on mental health can be even stronger.

What is often a trigger

The topic of social isolation and loneliness often appears after moving, a breakup, a job change, retirement, illness, the loss of a loved one, or after a longer period in which a person was functioning more in survival mode than in relationships. The CDC states that higher risk may concern, among others, young adults, older people, people living alone, people with lower incomes, migrants, or some minority groups.

Why it is important not to underestimate it

Loneliness and social isolation are not only unpleasant feelings. The WHO and CDC warn that over the long term they are linked with worse mental well-being and with an increased risk of depression, anxiety, self-harm, or suicidality. The CDC also notes connections with a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and premature death.

What usually helps

What helps most is not starting with big expectations, but with smaller steps. The NHS recommends talking about your feelings with someone close or with a professional, trying a group or an activity that feels meaningful, being around people at least sometimes even without strong performance pressure, and not comparing yourself so much with what others show, especially on social media. It is also important not to try to do everything at once and not to start with the goal of “stopping being lonely,” but rather with small and manageable contacts.

When a psychologist or therapist can help

A psychologist or therapist can be very useful when loneliness keeps returning over a long time, when a person feels strange among people, does not know how to make contact, is very afraid of rejection, or feels they no longer know how to get close to others at all. The Mental Health Foundation states that talking with a therapist or counsellor can provide a safe space to process feelings of loneliness without judgment. Help also makes sense when anxiety, depression, or strong withdrawal into oneself are added to isolation.

You are not alone in this

Social isolation and loneliness do not mean that there is something wrong with a person. They often only show that safe connection, support, or a sense of belonging is missing in their life. And this is something that can gradually be built again. A psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can be an important support so that a person does not remain in long-term disconnection, but can step by step return to greater closeness, confidence, and human contact.
