Asperger's syndrome

Are you dealing with Asperger syndrome in yourself or someone close to you? Find out when to seek help, what may be behind the difficulties, and how a psychologist can help you find the next step.

Asperger syndrome is a label that people still often use, even though today it is usually understood in professional terms as part of autism spectrum disorder. If someone received this diagnosis earlier, they may of course continue to use it, but in current diagnostic practice the broader terms autism or autism spectrum disorder are used more often.

What to understand by Asperger syndrome

It is a neurodevelopmental difference that mainly affects social understanding, communication, the way information is processed, the need for predictability, and often also the intensity of interests. A person may seem very capable, intelligent, and independent, while at the same time finding situations difficult that others consider ordinary — for example unwritten social rules, small talk, changes of plan, or environments full of stimuli. Autism is described as a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, learns, behaves, and forms relationships.

How it can show up

In one person, a strong need for order, routine, and difficulty coping with change may dominate. In another, difficulties in social situations may be more obvious — for example in reading tone, irony, nonverbal signals, or what is “expected between the lines.” Literal understanding of language, intense focus on specific topics, sensitivity to noise, light, or other stimuli, and exhaustion from social contact are also common. The NHS includes among typical signs in adults greater difficulty understanding other people, higher anxiety in social situations, literal interpretation of language, and a strong need for routine.

Why it can be so hard to recognize

Many people learn over the course of life to mask their difficulties. Outwardly, they may seem calm, capable, or “just a bit different,” while inwardly they experience great strain, fatigue, and uncertainty. In adults, some signs may also be mistaken for anxiety, introversion, perfectionism, or relationship difficulties. The NIMH notes that diagnosing autism in adults can be more difficult precisely because some signs overlap with other mental health difficulties.

Asperger syndrome and mental well-being

This neurodevelopmental difference in itself is not a mental illness. What can be difficult, however, is long-term misunderstanding, overload, repeated failure in social situations, a sense of being different, or the pressure to adapt to environments that do not fit the person well. That is why anxiety, exhaustion, low self-confidence, depressive feelings, or loneliness may also appear. Professional sources also point out that autistic people may more often experience additional difficulties as well, such as anxiety disorders or ADHD.

What usually helps

What helps most is greater self-understanding and less pressure to be “like everyone else.” It is useful to know how a person reacts to stress, what overwhelms them, what kind of environment suits them, and how to set communication, routine, and boundaries in a more sustainable way. It also matters greatly when the people around them understand that some reactions are not unwillingness or lack of sensitivity, but a different way of processing the world. According to the WHO, the needs and abilities of autistic people vary from person to person and may change over time.

When a psychologist or therapist can help

A psychologist or therapist can be useful when anxiety, overload, exhaustion from social situations, relationship difficulties, loneliness, or a long-term feeling of never quite fitting in become part of the picture around Asperger syndrome. Help also makes sense when a person is only just putting together why they have functioned a little differently throughout life, or when they need to better understand their strengths as well as their limits. In adults, both diagnosis and follow-up recommendations rely on professional assessment and can help target support and services more effectively.

You are not alone in this

Asperger syndrome is not a sign of lesser value or failure. It often simply means that a person perceives, processes, and experiences the world in a different way. When both the person and their surroundings understand this better, it can greatly reduce pressure, misunderstanding, and unnecessary self-criticism. A psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can be an important support in helping a long-term sense of difference gradually turn into greater understanding, confidence, and calm. Autism is a lifelong condition, and many autistic people can live independently, even though their support needs differ.
