Integration into society

Are you struggling with social inclusion in yourself or someone close to you? Find out when to seek help, what may be behind the problem, and how a psychologist can help you find the next step.

Becoming part of society is not only about being around people. It is mainly about the feeling that a person belongs somewhere, is accepted, has a place of their own, and does not have to keep feeling like an outsider. When this feeling is difficult to build, loneliness, insecurity, shame, anxiety, or long-term withdrawal into oneself may appear. Social connection is closely linked not only with psychological well-being, but also with overall health and quality of life.

What this can mean

Social inclusion can mean different things for different people. For some, it is the ability to build relationships. For others, it is the feeling of fitting in at school, work, in a community, or among peers. Some people need more close relationships, while others mainly need a sense of safety and acceptance in ordinary contact with the people around them. What matters is that it is not only about the number of people nearby, but also about the quality of relationships and how a person feels within them.

Why inclusion can be so difficult

Inclusion can become difficult after a long period of solitude, after moving, changing school or work, after a breakup, after illness, after retirement, or during a period when a person has lost confidence in themselves for a long time. For some people, social anxiety, low self-confidence, shame, a sense of being different, or past experiences of not feeling safe and accepted among others also play a role. Loneliness and social isolation can affect anyone, at any age.

How difficulties with inclusion can show up

A common feeling is that a person does not belong among others, does not know how to make contact, does not feel natural in a group, or has to stay constantly on guard. Some people become quieter and more withdrawn. Others overthink everything, fear rejection, compare themselves with others, or prefer to avoid relationships and social situations completely. Sadness, anxiety, lower mood, or a drop in self-confidence may also appear. Long-term loneliness is associated with poorer mental well-being and a higher risk of depression.

When it is not enough to “just be around people”

Many people think it is enough to go out more or simply try harder. But inclusion is not only a matter of willpower. If a person carries shame, insecurity, or earlier wounds, even ordinary contact with people can be very exhausting. That is why pressure such as “you just need to open up more” does not always help. What often helps more are safe and gradual steps that feel more manageable. According to psychological sources, the sense of belonging and connection is a basic human need, and when it is threatened, it can strongly affect both behaviour and mental state.

What usually helps

What helps most is not starting with big goals, but with smaller repeated steps. It can be useful to look for one safe connection instead of trying to “fit in everywhere,” to bring regularity back into life, to try environments where there is no strong pressure to perform, and not to see a slower pace as failure. It is also important not to remain only online, but to have at least some real experience of human contact in which a person can gradually be more themselves. Social connection and the feeling of community are linked with better mental well-being and healthier functioning.

When a psychologist or therapist can help

A psychologist or therapist can be useful when a person has long felt outside the group, struggles to build relationships, strongly fears rejection, keeps returning to loneliness, or feels they no longer know how to return among people. Help also makes sense when social anxiety, low self-confidence, shame, trauma, or long-term withdrawal are behind the difficulty. Psychological support can help a person better understand what is holding them back and look for a safer path toward greater connection with others and with themselves. Support is also recommended when loneliness is linked with stress, anxiety, or depressive mood.

You are not alone in this

The fact that a person does not feel included does not mean they are less valuable or that something is wrong with them. It often simply means they are carrying an experience, a change, or an inner burden that makes it harder to be at ease among people. Becoming part of society is rarely a one-time leap; it is more often a gradual process. And in that, a psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can be an important support. Social connection matters throughout life, and strengthening it makes sense even when it does not happen quickly.
