Childhood obesity
Is Your Child Struggling with Eating and Weight?
Does your child seem to eat almost all the time, or on the contrary eat very little during the day and then “make up for it” in the evening? Are they a very picky eater who refuses vegetables, fruit, and more balanced foods, while preferring fast food, fried meals, and sweets? Do they turn to food when they feel sad, upset, or emotionally uncomfortable? Are they gaining weight quickly? Do they hide sweets around the house or eat in secret? Overeating in children and later obesity can have many different causes. It is important not to assume that your child will simply “grow out of it,” but to look for the reasons behind this behaviour early on.
Childhood obesity is often reduced to a simple explanation: too much screen time and an unhealthy diet. But much less attention is given to the role emotions may play. Children can learn very early that food helps soothe distress. When they cry, they are offered ice cream. When they behave well, they are rewarded with chocolate. After an unpleasant experience, they may be comforted with a sweet treat. Over time, this can create a strong link between food, relief, reward, and emotional comfort. That is often where emotional overeating begins.
Childhood obesity is not only about body weight. It may also be connected with a range of physical health concerns, including metabolic changes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, skin problems, shortness of breath, lower physical fitness, and a higher risk of long-term health conditions.
How a Psychologist Can Help

and help in many other related areas
A child’s emotions and mental well-being need care in ways that go beyond food. This is exactly where support from a psychologist can make an important difference.
