Trauma
Trauma
Find out what trauma can cause, how it shows up in emotions, the body, and relationships, and when a psychologist can help you find greater calm and safety.
Trauma is not just “a very unpleasant experience.” It is a situation, event, or even a longer period that a person experiences as physically or psychologically threatening and that leaves a longer-lasting impact. It can arise after a single event, such as an accident, an assault, or a sudden loss, but also after repeated or long-term strain, for example through violence, neglect, or chronic threat. Professional sources also point out that trauma may affect a person not only in the mind, but also in the body, in relationships, and in everyday functioning.
What Trauma Means
Trauma is often connected with the feeling that, in that moment, the person did not have enough options, strength, or safety to carry the situation. That is why it is not only about what happened outwardly, but also about how deeply and how long it affected the person’s inner experience. Someone after a traumatic experience may feel shock and numbness, while another person may feel fear, chaos, inner tension, or disconnection from themselves and from the world around them. These reactions are common after trauma.
How Trauma Can Show Up
Trauma can show up in different ways. For some people, intrusive memories, nightmares, or flashbacks are most prominent. For others, it is more about avoiding people, places, and situations that remind them of what happened. Tension, heightened alertness, irritability, sleep problems, poorer concentration, feelings of disconnection, shame, guilt, or difficulty feeling safe again are also common. For some people, strong bodily symptoms are also present, because trauma very often becomes written into the body as well.
Trauma and PTSD Are Not the Same
Not everyone who has experienced trauma develops post-traumatic stress disorder. In some people, the acute reaction gradually fades. In others, however, the difficulties persist and begin to significantly affect ordinary life. That is when it may be PTSD — a state in which the person continues to feel threatened or overloaded long after the event, and the symptoms affect relationships, work, or daily functioning.
When Trauma Lasted a Long Time or Happened Repeatedly
With long-term or repeated trauma, the difficulties may show up in a broader way. Alongside the common symptoms of trauma, strong shame, feelings of worthlessness, difficulties regulating emotions, disrupted trust in people, relationship problems, or a lasting feeling that the person does not belong anywhere and is never fully safe may appear. This is often connected with complex trauma or a complex post-traumatic reaction.
What Is Often Hardest After Trauma
Many people are troubled not only by the memories themselves, but also by the fact that they stop trusting themselves. They may feel that they are reacting “strangely,” that they are no longer who they used to be, that they are overreacting, or that they should have been over it by now. But trauma often disrupts precisely the sense of safety, trust, control, and the relationship with oneself. That is why it is so important not to see these reactions as weakness, but as an understandable response to severe overload.
When It Makes Sense to Seek a Psychologist or Therapist
A psychologist or therapist makes sense when the difficulties keep returning, last a long time, worsen, or begin to affect sleep, relationships, work, the body, or everyday functioning. Help is also appropriate when a person feels disconnected, constantly on edge, avoids reminders of the event, keeps having nightmares or panic, or feels that after the traumatic experience they “cannot get back to themselves.” With trauma, it is important to work with a professional who has experience in this area.
What Psychotherapy Can Help With
Psychotherapy can help rebuild a sense of safety, better understand one’s reactions, gradually process the traumatic experience, and reduce its impact on present life. In trauma work, trauma-focused approaches and other psychotherapeutic methods are commonly used according to the person’s needs; sometimes medication or a combination of several forms of support may also be part of treatment. It is also important that the therapeutic approach takes into account the risk of retraumatisation and works in a sensitive, safe way and at a pace the person can manage.
When Help Is Needed Immediately
If thoughts of self-harm appear, there is severe disorientation, the feeling that it can no longer be carried, or you are in immediate danger, it is important not to wait and to seek urgent help right away. In the Czech Republic, in an immediate emergency you can call 112 or 155.
You Are Not Alone in This
Trauma can disconnect a person from calm, trust, and the feeling that the world is a safe place for a long time. But that does not mean change is not possible. When a traumatic experience begins to be addressed with sensitivity and in time, its strength and its impact on everyday life can gradually lessen. A psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can be an important support on the path toward greater stability, safety, and returning to yourself.
