Managing the demands of work

Do you feel that work is starting to become too much? Find out how to manage work pressure better and when a psychologist may help.

Work can be a source of meaning, stability, and self-fulfilment. But when work demands remain higher for a long time than the space, energy, and support a person has available, that pressure gradually begins to affect mental well-being, the body, and relationships. At that point, ordinary workload can turn into a state that constantly drains a person, takes away their peace, and makes it difficult to truly switch off. WHO points out that work can support mental health, but it can also harm it, especially when it is linked with excessive demands, low support, or other psychosocial risks.

When Work Stops Being Only Demanding and Starts Becoming Overwhelming

Work demands are not only about the number of tasks. They are often also about pace, responsibility, pressure to perform, constant availability, difficult relationships at work, unclear expectations, or the feeling that a person has little control over their work. Stress usually arises when a person feels that the demands exceed their resources and coping capacity. That is why the same job can affect two people in completely different ways.

How Work Overload Can Show Up

Increased work demands often do not appear only “in the mind.” A person may feel chronically tired, irritable, distracted, less able to concentrate, lose motivation, or feel that they are simply “running on performance.” At the same time, headaches, physical tension, stomach discomfort, chest pressure, heart palpitations, or worsening sleep may also appear. NHS and WHO both note that stress commonly affects both the body and the mind, and it can also influence behaviour.

What Is Often Hardest About Coping with Work

For many people, it is not only the work itself that exhausts them, but also the way they relate to it. Some are afraid to slow down, others feel the need to keep everything under control, and others carry a long-term belief that they must endure, do more than everyone else, and never show weakness. Then it becomes very hard to recognise the line between healthy responsibility and overload. Expert sources on workplace stress recommend paying attention to the point at which a person no longer has space for recovery, rest, and ordinary life outside work.

When It Is More Than Just “A Demanding Period”

An occasional more intense period is normal. But it is worth paying closer attention when overload lasts for weeks or months, when it becomes impossible to switch off even outside work, and when work pressure begins to visibly affect sleep, health, relationships, or mental well-being. A warning sign can also be when a person loses joy, feels empty or detached, or becomes less and less resilient. WHO describes long-term unmanaged work stress as the basis of burnout and emphasises that preventing mental health problems at work is an important part of a safe working environment.

What Usually Helps When Coping with Work Demands

What helps most is noticing early enough that the pressure is no longer just “part of the job,” but is beginning to overwhelm the person. It can be useful to name the main sources of strain, adjust expectations, seek support, separate priorities more clearly, and not allow work to take over all available space. Practical resources for managing stress recommend, among other things, regular movement, mindful breaks, better sleep, reducing constant availability, caring for relationships, and setting clearer boundaries between work and personal life.

A Psychologist, a Therapist, and Managing Work Pressure

A psychologist or therapist can be very helpful when a person no longer wants to simply “push through even more,” but needs to understand the whole situation more clearly. Psychological support can help identify what specifically triggers work overload, why setting boundaries feels so difficult, how work pressure is showing up in the body and emotions, and how to return to a way of functioning that is not based only on performance. A therapist can also be supportive when work pressure is joined by anxiety, irritability, insomnia, loss of motivation, or problems at home. Expert sources note that if a person feels overwhelmed by stress or overload, a therapist or another professional can help them find more effective ways of coping.

When It Makes Sense to Seek Help

Seeking help makes sense when work demands are no longer affecting only performance, but life as a whole. That means when a person has long-term sleep problems, feels irritable, often has physical stress reactions connected to work, brings tension home, loses energy, or feels they can no longer manage the situation alone. Reaching out to a psychologist, therapist, or other professional support is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it is often an important step when rising overload needs to be addressed before it turns into deeper exhaustion or burnout.

You Are Not Alone in This

Coping with work demands is such an important topic today because many people function on the edge of their capacity for a long time. The fact that work is exhausting you more than you would like does not mean that you are weak or incapable. Often, it simply means that the demands have been higher for too long than what a person can carry without consequences. A psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can be an important support in making sure work does not become the main source of long-term stress, but remains a part of life rather than its entire content.
