Drugs

Are you struggling with drug addiction in yourself or someone close to you? Find out how to recognize warning signs, what causes addiction, and when psychological support can help.

Drug addiction is not just “weak will” or a single bad decision. It is a condition in which a person gradually loses control over their use, the substance begins to shape their day, relationships, work, and mental state, and they continue using it even though it is clearly harming them. Addiction may involve illegal drugs, but also medication or other addictive substances. Repeated use changes the way the brain functions, and that is exactly why it is often so hard to stop through willpower alone.

What drug addiction means

Not every use of a drug automatically means addiction. What matters most is the pattern. That means whether a person is losing control, needs the substance more often or in greater amounts, neglects ordinary life because of it, continues despite harm, and feels significantly worse without it. Addiction is also connected with craving, meaning a strong urge for the substance, and with some drugs also withdrawal symptoms or a “comedown” that pushes the person back toward using again.

How drug problems can show up

For some people, it first appears as changes in mood, irritability, withdrawal, problems functioning, difficulties at work or school, and neglect of responsibilities and relationships. In others, the most noticeable signs are secrecy, financial problems, swings in energy, insomnia, increased risk-taking, or the fact that life starts revolving around where to get the substance, when to use it, and how to manage without it. A common sign is also that the person sees the damage themselves, yet still cannot stop.

Why it is often so hard to stop

Many people on the outside do not understand why the person does not simply stop. But addiction is not only a habit. With drugs, the brain’s reward system becomes involved, along with relief from unpleasant states, craving, withdrawal difficulties, and a psychological tie to the substance. For some people, drugs also temporarily numb anxiety, pain, emptiness, or inner tension. The person is then fighting not only the substance itself, but also what rises to the surface without it.

Drugs and mental health

Drug addiction is very often closely linked with mental health. Some people start using because of anxiety, depression, trauma, loneliness, or pressure. For others, mental health difficulties develop later in connection with using. These two areas often worsen each other. Psychological suffering can increase the risk of addiction, while addiction can deepen anxiety, depressive symptoms, irritability, paranoia, or overall instability.

When it is no longer just experimentation or “occasional use”

The situation deserves attention when use repeats, increases, the person lies about it, excuses it, loses relationships, work, money, or health because of it, and still continues. It is also important to pay attention when they cannot manage a normal day without the substance, their behaviour changes significantly, or it feels as if using is no longer a choice but a necessity. Addiction is a treatable condition, but the earlier it is recognised, the greater the chance of a more stable change.

When a psychologist or therapist can help

A psychologist or therapist can be very important when the person does not want to address only the use itself, but also what lies behind it. Help makes sense when stopping repeatedly fails, when the drug has become the main way of finding relief, or when anxiety, depression, trauma, shame, or relationship problems are tied to the use. Psychological support can help the person better understand triggers, craving, relapse, and how to build a life that is not based only on abstinence, but also on greater stability and meaning. In addiction treatment, psychotherapy, counselling, and for some types of addiction also medication are commonly used.

What usually helps

What helps most is not staying alone with it. It is useful to stop minimising the problem, to admit openly how serious it has become, and to seek support before the situation falls apart even more. For some people, outpatient treatment is enough. Others need more intensive care, detoxification, or a follow-up program. It is also important to understand that addiction treatment is usually not a one-time event, but a process. Relapse is not proof that change is impossible, but a sign that treatment and support need to be adjusted again.

When help is needed immediately

Immediate help is needed when the person is unconscious after using, very sedated, breathing slowly or not at all, turning blue, unresponsive, having seizures, severely confused, or in direct danger of death. With opioids, this may be an overdose, which is life-threatening and requires urgent intervention; in such a situation emergency services should be called immediately. In opioid overdose, naloxone can save a life, but the person also needs urgent medical care.

You are not alone in this

Drug addiction is often deeply painful for the person and their loved ones precisely because it takes away control, trust, and hope. But that does not mean change is impossible. Addiction is treatable, and help exists. A psychologist, therapist, or psychotherapy can be an important part of the way out, because they do not address only the substance, but also the person behind it — their pain, fear, shame, relationships, and the reasons why the drug took such a strong place in their life.
